If you want to correct your skin imperfections caused by aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne, sun damage, and more, you may want to consider chemical peels. Chemical peels offer a quick, non-surgical approach to facial rejuvenation.

What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that improve your skin’s appearance. A chemical peel involves applying a chemical solution to your skin, which causes the dead skin cells to peel off. The new skin revealed after a chemical peel is usually smoother, may be less wrinkled and less pigmented with spots and acne areas.

Is There Any Recovery Time for Chemical Peels?

One of the great things about chemical peels is that little to no downtime is required after the treatment. However, recovery time varies depending on the chemical peel used. You may experience some redness, swelling and peeling after the peel. Redness may last for a few weeks depending on how deep the chemical peel was.

After a light chemical peel, it may take about one day to a week for the treated areas to heal. Several treatments may be needed to achieve desired results.  You’ll be able to wear makeup the day after your light peel.

After medium or deep peels, the treated areas may heal in two to four weeks.  Patients can expect redness, swelling and peeling after treatment.  As they are deeper peels a few treatments may be needed.  The provider will give post care instructions to include staying out of the sun.

After any chemical peel, your new skin will be more sensitive to the sun. It’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions and avoid exposing your skin to sunlight or other ultraviolet light sources for as long as your provider recommends.

When Can I See Chemical Results?

You will usually see the results of your chemical peel within two to four weeks. Your skin will continue to improve after the peel as new skin cells grow and replace the old ones. Chemical peel results can last for months, depending on the chemical peel you received and your lifestyle and at home care.  Patients often choose to have a few treatments to achieve optimal results.
