What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are designed to induce a controlled wound and remove superficial layers of the skin. They promote the growth of a new healthy layer of skin and improve a variety of skin imperfections.

Since there are different types of chemical peels, the treatment process varies. In most cases, however, the skin gets prepped with a medical degreaser so that the treated area can become free of any oils left on the skin.

Then, the chemical agent is applied and remains on the skin for 3 to 5 minutes. You can expect to feel a mild stinging, which will fade after a few minutes. It is important to note that some peels are intended to self neutralize and may be kept on the skin for 2 to 4 hours.

Types of Chemical Peels

While some chemical peels can treat surface issues on your skin, others can address concerns that begin in the deeper layers of your skin. Here is a brief overview of the most popular types of chemical peels:

Glycolic Peels

Glycolic peels are ideal for exfoliating and rejuvenating the skin. They penetrate the skin the deepest and are available in different strengths.

Beta Peels

Beta peels are specifically formulated to treat acne in younger and older patients. They use salicylic acid to help control oil and target bacteria that leads to acne.

Lactic Peels

Lactic peels are great for dry or sensitive skin. They are made of milk and feature active ingredients like retinol, which can smooth the skin while balancing its PH levels.

How Chemical Peels Can Improve Your Skin

Chemical peels offer a plethora of benefits. If you receive a chemical peel, you can expect it to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, resolve sun damage, improve acne, diminish the appearance of scars, and/or correct pigment issues. A chemical peel can leave you with a beautiful glow and skin that you are proud of it.
