Looking for a non-invasive way to address pigmentation issues? We often recommend IPL or Intense Pulsed Light, also known as a photofacial. This treatment is an excellent option if you want to improve the appearance of your skin, especially if you have sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or other skin conditions.

What is an IPL Photofacial Treatment?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a non-invasive treatment that uses a broad spectrum of light to target different layers of the skin. At Renew MD, we use it to treat various skin conditions, such as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and acne. This treatment is sometimes referred to as a photofacial because it can improve the skin’s overall appearance and make it look younger and more radiant.

What Conditions is IPL Treatment Used For?

Sun Damage

Sun damage is a common skin problem, especially in individuals who spend a lot of time in the sun or have fair skin. IPL treatment can help reduce the appearance of sunspots and other signs of sun damage.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is when the skin produces too much melanin, resulting in dark patches or spots. IPL treatment targets this melanin to reduce hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, inflammation, and sometimes small pimples on the face. IPL treatment can reduce the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea.

Acne

IPL treatment can reduce the appearance of acne by killing the bacteria that cause it and reducing inflammation. It can also help to diminish post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from past acne breakouts.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

IPL treatment can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production, which can make the skin look firmer and smoother. This new collagen also improves your skin’s texture and tone.

How Does an IPL Photofacial Work?

During an IPL photofacial treatment, a handheld device delivers pulses of light to the skin. The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by pigments such as melanin and hemoglobin. The absorbed light converts into heat, which breaks down the targeted pigments. This process can help reduce the appearance of sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and other skin conditions.

Is There Any Downtime With IPL Treatment?

IPL treatment is non-invasive and requires no downtime. You can return to your daily activities immediately after treatment. However, some individuals may experience mild redness or swelling in the treated area, which usually subsides within a few hours.

Am I a Good Candidate for IPL Treatment?

If you have sun damage, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, or acne, you may be a good candidate for IPL treatment. However, IPL treatment may not be suitable for individuals with darker skin tones. It is also not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
